Wiring Categories

Cat 5 cabling – Category 5 provides an open and flexible infrastructure that supports all local area networks up to 100Mbit/s Ethernet speed.

Cat 5e cabling – Supports speeds up to 1000Mbit/s (Gidabit Ethernet) for local area networks (LAN).

Cat 6 cabling – Provides higher performance (250 MHz) cabling systems. Currently supports up to 1 Gigabit, but has the potential to support higher speeds in the future.

Cat 7 cabling – Fully shielded and supports 600MHz. Provides more than twice the bandwidth of Cat 5/6, but is much more expensive and bulky.

Fiber Optic – Suitable for high-speed fiber transmission systems, including Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet Backbone technologies. Second generation fibers such as OM1, OM2, OM3 and OS1 are used.
